Welcome to the Camp Italia region that joined VWMOOC21 with today’s meeting.
First of all, thank you for your presence! If you want, you can sit on the benches so we can start our chat.
I feel like asking if you are new to Second Life or if you already have experience of this platform. And what is your native language?
Our chat today will be in English so that we can be understood by all (or almost) those who are following us on Zoom and by those who will follow us on YouTube in the coming days.
So, a greeting also to those who follow us from a distance and not in presence here in Camp Italia: you are welcome!
Here, we are in the educational area of Camp Italia and this is the area dedicated to the first impact with Second Life for new avatars or for those who do not yet have experience in using this 3D platform.
Here, you can see there are 29 panels on the sides of the area and each panel explains in Italian how Second Life works: they are the first steps.
Upon your arrival, you received a notecard in Italian: this is because Camp Italia is an Italian-speaking region.
To be exact, Camp Italia is a Community Gateway recognized by Linden Lab as a place where new avatars can find useful information and hospitality.
Before going into our chat on the educational paths we have experienced in this our first year of activity, it is important to say what exactly a Community Gateway is.
In 2017 Linden Lab unveiled the new Community Gateway (CG) Program.
The purpose of this program is to offer to the community/group the opportunity to help new residents begin their Second Life journey, to assist in the creation of their new personal avatars and to help increase the loyalty of the new users.
The Camp Italia management team has adhered to the new terms of the Community Gateway program by creating a space where Italian-speaking residents can meet, learn how to use the viewer correctly in its countless ever-changing possibilities of use, and spend pleasant time in the metaverse of Second Life.
The Community Gateways have the characteristic of using the mother tongue: Camp Italia in Italian, but there are other Community Gateway regions in other languages such as English, Spanish, Brazilian. And also a great Community Gateway which is that of Firestorm Team.
We organize courses to learn how Second Life works and in a few days, as you can see in the easel shown here, a new course for beginners will start. The courses are taught in Italian by qualified accounts of the Camp Italia team and are based on the experience of the official Second Life viewer – the one you download and install from the Second Life website.
We also hold advanced courses that can be organized upon request of at least a minimum number of users equal to 5 avatars, while to have support or ask for help outside of the lessons and courses, you can contact the Support team in several ways: here in sim during the reception time slots or by contacting someone of the staff directly from the panels located in the main square of the region and which we will visit later.
And we also organize Italian language courses upon request of at least 7 avatars.
The characteristic of Camp Italia is that it was built with accurate educational characteristics and not only of an aesthetic type: our mission and our goal was the usability of everyone. Of those who connect with powerful computers but also of those who connect with a small computer with minimal features.
The sim was built with a look at the Italian landscape but also at the ancient history of Italy: you will find ruins from the Roman era and statues that reproduce existing works of art in Italian museums, such as Michelangelo’s David.
We know that the beginnings of Second Life can be a bit complicated until you learn how to use the viewer and move easily: we built this sim so that beginners can feel comfortable and learn without problems.
Community Gateways are a Linden Lab project born for this reason.
Camp Italia has rules of conduct that we invite you to respect: they are based on respect for others and for places.
The style is Mediterranean and the paths between the various areas have been designed and built according to different skill levels so that the new user can learn to walk and move and perform the usual actions of an inworld avatar.
And here we get to the heart of our appointment: how to use Second Life for educational resolutions?
3D offers numerous innovative ideas in all fields and also in teaching: can you do school using Second Life?
The answer is obviously yes !!
And on how and on the mood that we compare.
In recent years, many educators use this platform, Second Life, to give lessons to their classes and this sometimes happens under the incredulous gaze of those who are not used to virtual worlds and who see these platforms only as a game tool.
But here, in Second Life, we are also in the virtual world that the American Civil Protection uses for their trainings and that hospitals use for the treatment of some clinical pathologies.
We are in the world of the creativity and experimentation!
And, therefore, as pioneers, over many many years ago we started experimenting with Second Life as an extension of real life activities. Today, 18 years after the birth of Second Life, it can be said without a shadow of a doubt that this platform can have educational uses.
The terrible lockdown the whole world has been experiencing for almost two years has also placed us in a position to relate to Second Life with more attention: today we know that here, in the Linden Lab platform par excellence, here you can do School with students and teachers and with different creativity and methods.
As a Community Gateway our main task is to explain how Second Life is used. When learning the use of this platform, then and only then, it is possible to develop higher educational courses and educational paths.
As I mentioned before, the system of courses for beginners is based on these panels of first and immediate approach, and then theoretical lessons and practical lessons.
And our motto is “learning by doing”!
The whole Camp Italia region was built on the basis of this approach and here even walking along the paths involves an “invisible” exercise in which the new avatars try.
Minimize lag by balancing solids and voids in design, use architecture and virtual experiences as a teaching tool.
But fundamental, in any teaching methodology, is empathy: creating a good relationship with the class and your students and understanding that the same method is not suitable for everyone and adapting the courses based on the needs of the class.
Before moving on to the second part of this speech, a few words about the different didactic areas of Camp Italia.
In addition to this educational area where we are now and the ground level area where we will go shortly, there are some other cultural and tourist areas in order to offer to our visitors a full approach.
Camp Italia is an Italian-speaking region and the design is Mediterranean, with hints of history such as the Roman theater area, tourism such as the Tuscan farmhouse area and the fortress of Positano.
An approach of history and friendship between peoples that dedicates an area to the great friendship between Italy and Japan (let’s not forget the over 60 twin cities) that we celebrate here with a historical reconstruction of the first embassy between the two countries, the first embassy in the world ever for Italy.
And then Venice: capital of historical and cultural beauty in the world of which we have reconstructed a small corner and whose International Film Festival is celebrated with an annual event still in progress here in Camp Italia.
And that’s where we now move: to the welcome area on the ground level where our walk will continue.
CAMP ITALIA at VWMOCC21 – Part 2 (welcome area)
Here we are, in the welcome area of Camp Italia: did you travel well? I hope your teleportation went smoothly (kidding, of course)
In this area, new Italian-speaking residents and visitors will find all the information they need for an optimal stay and a “dedicated” welcome team.
Camp Italia hosts, as I mentioned before, programs of theoretical and practical lessons on the use of Second Life, but also exhibitions, conferences, events, concerts and dance evenings.
On this level we have a museum with a conference room, a permanent exhibition on Futurism, the artistic movement born in Italy at the beginning of the last century, a bar with indoor and outdoor tables, and of course the large wall with the info point.
Here we also find 3 teleportation systems. The one inside the sim can be found under the board and a luminous arrow on the ground indicates it. The other two systems lead one to other community gateways and the other to some very beautiful Second Life regions to visit.
On this level we have the beaches, the terrace overlooking the sea, the restaurant-pizzeria, the campsite, the forest, the vineyard, and the lighthouse. And then also an ice skating rink, a little church, the glimpse of some palaces in Venice and the Burano waterfront.
These places were built to allow beginners to learn how to move and interact with objects in Second Life, and not only for esthetical purposes.
All in a safe, relaxing environment, equipped with the major attractions and technological innovations existing in Second Life.
There are paths with pathways that take you to the snow-capped mountains of the sim: the one behind the Plaza arrives on a skating rink where you are offered in addition to the breathtaking view also ice skates and hot chocolate.
The other path that leads to the church, skirts the forest and climbs up the impervious slopes of the sim to the top: it was built to allow the beginner avatar to learn to walk and move on foot in the Second Life metaverse.
We know that the beginnings of Second Life can be a bit complicated until you learn how to use the viewer and move easily: we built this sim so that beginners can feel comfortable and learn without problems, from basic to advanced tools.
To newcomers we always say: do not rush, learn and experiment calmly.

Benvenuti nella regione di Camp Italia che ha aderito al VWMOOC21 con l’appuntamento di oggi.
Innanzitutto grazie per la vostra presenza! Se volete potete accomodarvi sui banchi così da poter iniziare la nostra chiacchierata.
Mi sento di chiedere se siete nuovi in Second Life o se avete già esperienza di questa piattaforma. E la vostra lingua madre.
La nostra chiacchierata di oggi si farà in lingua inglese così da poter essere capiti da tutti ( o quasi ) coloro che ci stanno seguendo su Zoom e da coloro che ci seguiranno in differita su YouTube nei prossimi giorni.
Dunque, un saluto anche a chi ci segue a distanza e non in presenza qui in Camp Italia: siete i benvenuti!
Qui ci troviamo nell’area educational di Camp Italia ed è l’area dedicata al primo impatto con Second Life per i nuovi avatar o per chi non ha ancora esperienza nell’utilizzo di questa piattaforma 3D.

Per l’esattezza, Camp Italia è un Community Gateway riconosciuto dalla Linden Lab come luogo dove i nuovi avatar possono trovare informazioni utili ed accoglienza.
Prima di addentrarci nella nostra chiacchierata sui percorsi educational che abbiamo sperimentato in questo primo anno di attività, è importante dire cosa è esattamente un Community Gateway.
Nel 2017 la Linden Lab ha presentato il nuovo Programma Community Gateway (CG).
Lo scopo di questo programma è di offrire alla comunità / gruppo l’opportunità di aiutare i nuovi residenti ad iniziare il loro viaggio in Second Life, di dare una mano guida nella creazione dei loro nuovi avatar personali e di aiutare ad aumentare la fidelizzazione dei nuovi utenti.
Il Team di gestione di Camp Italia ha aderito ai nuovi termini del programma Community Gateway creando uno spazio dove i residenti di lingua italiana possano incontrarsi, imparare ad usare correttamente il viewer nelle sue innumerevoli possibilità di utilizzo sempre in continua evoluzione, e trascorrere del tempo piacevole nel metaverso di Second Life.
I Community Gateway hanno la caratteristica dell’uso della lingua madre: Camp Italia in lingua italiana, ma vi sono altre regioni Community Gateway in altre lingue come l’inglese, lo spagnolo, il brasiliano. Ed anche un grande Community Gateway che è quello di Firestorm.
Noi organizziamo Corsi per Imparare come funziona Second Life e tra pochi giorni, come potete vedere nell’easel qui esposto, inizia un nuovo corso per principianti. I corsi sono tenuti in lingua italiana da account qualificati del team di Camp Italia e si basano sull’esperienza del viewer ufficiale di Second Life – ovvero quello che si scarica ed installa dal sito di Second Life.
Teniamo anche Corsi avanzati che possono essere organizzati su richiesta di almeno un numero minimo di utenti pari a 5 avatar, mentre per avere invece supporto o chiedere aiuto al di fuori delle lezioni e dei corsi, ci si può rivolgere al team di Supporto in più modi: qui in sim nelle fasce orarie di accoglienza oppure contattando direttamente qualcuno dello Staff dai pannelli che si trovano nella piazza principale della regione e che visiteremo dopo.
E si organizzano anche Corsi di Lingua italiana su richiesta di almeno 7 avatar.
La caratteristica di Camp Italia è che è stata costruita con delle precise caratteristiche educational e nono solo di tipo estetico: la nostra mission ed il nostro obiettivo è stato la fruibilità di tutti. Di chi si collega con computer potenti ma anche di chi si collega con un piccolo computer con caratteristiche minime.
La sim è stata costruita con uno sguardo al paesaggio italiano ma anche alla Storia antica dell’Italia: trovi ruderi di epoca romana e statue che ripropongono opere d’arte esistenti nei musei d’Italia, come il Davide di Michelangelo.
Sappiamo che gli inizi di Second Life possono risultare un po’ complicati finché non si impara ad usare il viewer ed a muoversi agevolmente: abbiamo costruito questa sim perchè i principianti possano sentirsi a loro agio ed imparare senza problemi.
Le Community Gateway sono un progetto della Linden Lab nato proprio per questo motivo.
Camp Italia ha delle regole di comportamento che ti invitiamo a rispettare: esse sono basate sul rispetto dell’altro e dei luoghi.
Lo stile è quello Mediterraneo ed i percorsi tra le varie aree sono state studiati e costruiti secondo differenti livelli di abilità così che il nuovo utente possa imparare a camminare e muoversi e compiere le azioni usuali di un avatar inworld.
E qui entriamo nel vivo di questo nostro appuntamento: come utilizzare Second Life per scopi didattici?
Il 3D offre numerosi spunti innovativi in tutti i campi ed anche in quello della didattica: si può fare Scuola usando Second Life?
La risposta è ovviamente sì!!
E sul come e sulle modalità che ci si confronta.
In questi anni molti educatori utilizzano questa piattaforma, Second Life, per fare lezioni alle loro classi e ciò avviene talvolta sotto gli sguardi increduli di coloro che non sono abituati ai mondi virtuali e che vedono queste piattaforme come strumento di gioco.
Ma qui, in Second Life, siamo anche nel mondo virtuale che la Protezione Civile americana utilizza per le esercitazioni e che ospedali usano per la cura di alcune patologie cliniche.
Siamo nel mondo dell’arte, della creatività, della sperimentazione.
E, dunque, come pionieri, in tanti molti anni fa abbiamo iniziato a sperimentare Second Life come estensione delle attività della vita reale. Oggi, a distanza di 18 anni dalla nascita di Second Life, si può senza ombra di dubbio affermare che questa piattaforma può avere utilizzi didattici.
Il terribile lockdown tutto il mondo sta vivendo da quasi due anni ci ha anche posti in una condizione di relazionarci a Second Life con una attenzione maggiore: oggi sappiamo che qui, nella piattaforma per eccellenza della Linden Lab, qui si può fare la Scuola con studenti e docenti e con differente creatività e modalità.
Come Community Gateway il nostro compito principale è quello di spiegare come si usa Second Life. Nel momento in cui si apprende l’uso di questa piattaforma, allora e solo allora, è possibile mettere a punto indirizzi didattici e percorsi educativi di tipologia superiore.
Come vi accennavo prima, il sistema dei Corsi per principianti è basato su questi pannelli di primo e immediato approccio, e poi lezioni teoriche e lezioni pratiche.
Il nostro motto è “learning by doing”, ovvero imparare facendo.
Tutta la regione di Camp Italia è stata costruita sulla base di questo approccio e qui anche camminare per i sentieri comporta un esercizio “invisibile” in cui i nuovi avatar si cimentano cammin facendo.
Minimizzare il lag equilibrando i pieni e i vuoti nel design, utilizzare l’architettura e le esperienze virtuali come mezzo didattico.
Ma fondamentale, in ogni metodologia di insegnamento, è l’empatia: creare un buon rapporto con la classe ed i propri studenti e comprendere che lo stesso metodo non va bene per tutti ed adattare i percorsi sulla base della necessità della classe.
Prima di passare alla seconda parte di questo mio intervento, poche parole sulle differenti area didattiche di Camp Italia.
Oltre a questa area educational dove ci troviamo adesso e l’area a livello ground dove andremo tra poco, vi sono alcune altre aree di tipo culturale e turistico per poter offrire ai nostri visitatori un approccio a 360 gradi.
Camp Italia è una regione a lingua italiana ed il design è di tipo mediterraneo, con spunti di storia come l’area del teatro romano, di turismo come l’area del casale toscano e la rocca di Positano.
Un approccio di Storia e dell’amicizia tra i popoli che dedica un’area alla grande amicizia tra l’Italia ed il Giappone (non dimentichiamo le oltre 60 città gemellate) che noi qui celebriamo con una ricostruzione storica della prima ambasciata tra i due Paesi, prima ambasciata nel mondo in assoluto per l’Italia, dentro un’ area dedicata.
E poi Venezia: capitale di bellezza storico-culturale nel mondo di cui abbiamo ricostruito un piccolo angolo ed il cui Festival Internazionale del Cinema viene celebrato con un evento annuale ancora in corso qui in Camp Italia.
Ed è li che adesso ci spostiamo: alla welcome area del livello ground dove proseguirà la nostra passeggiata.
CAMP ITALIA at VWMOCC21 – Part 2 (welcome area)
Eccoci qui, nella welcome area di benvenuto di Camp Italia: avete viaggiato bene? Spero che il vostro teletrasporto non abbia avuto intoppi (scherzo, ovviamente)
In questa area i nuovi residenti di lingua italiana ed i visitatori trovano tutte le informazioni necessarie ad una permanenza ottimale ed un team “dedicato” per l’accoglienza.
Camp Italia ospita, come accennavo prima, programmi di lezioni teoriche e pratiche sull’uso di Second Life, ma anche mostre, conferenze, eventi, concerti e serate danzanti.
Su questo livello abbiamo un museo con aula conferenze, una mostra permanente sul Futurismo, corrente artistica nata in Italia all’inizio dello scorso secolo, un bar con tavolini al chiuso ed all’aperto, e naturalmente il grande muro con l’info point.
Qui troviamo anche 3 sistemi di teletrasporto. Quello interno alla sim lo trovate sotto al tabellone ed una freccia luminosa per terra lo indica. Gli altri due sistemi portano uno ad altri community gateway e l’altro ad alcune regioni di Second Life molto belle da visitare.
Su questo livello abbiamo le spiagge, la terrazza sul mare, il ristorante-pizzeria, il campeggio, la foresta, la vigna, ed il faro. E poi anche una pista per pattinare sul ghiaccio, la chiesetta, lo scorcio di alcuni palazzi di Venezia e il lungomare di Burano.
Questi luoghi sono stati costruiti per permettere ai principianti di imparare a muoversi ed interagire con gli oggetti, in Second Life.
Il tutto in ambiente sicuro, rilassante, e dotato delle maggiori attrazioni e novità tecnologiche esistenti in Second Life.
Vi sono dei percorsi con sentieri che ti portano sulle montagne innevate della sim: quello dietro alla Plaza arriva su una pista da pattinaggio dove ti viene offerto oltre al panorama mozzafiato anche dei pattini da ghiaccio e della cioccolata calda.
L’altro sentiero che porta alla chiesetta, costeggia la foresta e si inerpica su per i clivi impervi della sim fino alla cima: è stato costruito per permettere all’avatar principiante di imparare a camminare e muoversi a piedi nel metaverso di Second Life.
Sappiamo che gli inizi di Second Life possono risultare un po’ complicati finché non si impara ad usare il viewer ed a muoversi agevolmente: abbiamo costruito questa sim perchè i principianti possano sentirsi a loro agio ed imparare senza problemi, dagli strumenti base e quelli avanzati.
Le Community Gateway sono un progetto della Linden Lab nato proprio per questo motivo.
Ai nuovi arrivati diciamo sempre: non abbiate fretta, imparate e sperimentate con calma.

Chiacchiere in libertà su vino, gelato e pizza. E, naturalmente, sul nuovo corso per imparare l’utilizzo di Second Life che inizia Martedì 28 Settembre, e su un nuovo probabile corso di lingua italiana.
